Member of the Nymphaeaceae family. The orchid is associated with the nymph Arachne.

Legend has it that the nymph Arachne provoked the jealousy of the goddess Athena by surpassing her in the art of embroidery during a weaving competition. Athena flew into a rage at the beauty of her art and struck Arachne with her sword, ripping her remarkable embroidery to shreds. Humiliated, the young weaver took refuge in her home and took her own life.

When Athena saw her lifeless body, she was moved to pity. She brought Arachne back to life by turning her into a spider so that she could weave for the rest of her life.

The orchid, which is shaped like a spider, pays homage to the nymph.
